Style It!: Pretty Dress

Hello again! I've just gotten over a pretty bad week of bronchitis so I am pretty thrilled to be back to blogging. And I was even more excited to bring you this awesome collaboration with Pretty Dress! You might remember that I've worn one of their beautiful retro-inspired dresses before (to a hot rod show, no less) and this particular dress from this post will be styled up by a bunch of other Perth bloggers as well.

It's a really nice, unfussy dress by itself, but I really wanted to pair it with a skirt. This beautifully printed one felt very Roman Holiday! Or maybe that's just me. I think this dress will be perfect to wear on summer picnics, or out to brunch, or to outdoor cinemas... clearly I have a very specific list of things I want to do when the weather gets warmer! I really love the bow at the neckline. Because it has an empire waist that is probably meant to sit under the bust but for me sits in the middle of my boobs, I think I'll definitely stick to wearing it as a dress so I don't get the little pouf of fabric around my middle. I mean, it looks like a pouf of fabric but is actually... more boob. Geez.

I'm living out of a suitcase at the moment (and when I say suitcase, I mean pile of clothes that have been unceremoniously dumped in a pile) while my house is getting re-wired. For some reason I brought a flamingo-printed skirt, a pie-printed dress and a Halloween themed cardigan, but forgot the essentials like another pair of shoes. And a toothbrush. And pyjamas. I guess you can see where my priorities lie.

Oh and I do have to say a huge thank you to my friend Ana in Pigeonhole Shop 9 for taking my photos! It's always a bit awkward having to ask someone to take a photo of yourself for your blog which is filled with photos of yourself. Oh well.

{This dress was sent to me for a collaboration with Pretty Dress; however all opinions are my own}

Grease Is The Word

I thought it was time to have a little blog post dedicated to one of my favourite movies of all time. I remember I was NEVER allowed to watch Grease when I was little. Maybe because of all the drinkin', smokin' and sexual references... which of course meant that I watched it every chance I got (sorry mum). While I might not have known what a "twenty-five cent insurance policy" was, or why it mattered when it broke, one thing that definitely stayed with me was the film's aesthetic. I really think it might have been the basis of my love of all things retro, kitsch and a little bit daggy. Thanks for the good times, Grease

Back to Black (Again)

Hello! So these aren't the best pictures but I did want to show off my new hair colour! Or I guess it's my old hair colour. WHATEVER THE CASE, it's not purple/blonde/ratty roots any more and is back to a beautiful glossy brunette. I also decided to bring back the short fringe because I really do love it. To be honest, I didn't like it that much after it was done - not because it was a bad colour or anything, just because I felt so... normal. No more purple. No more crazy hair. But over the weekend I fell in love with it and today, well, today I loved it so much I took crappy Photobooth pictures just to show you.

Sorry for the lack of regular posts lately, I've been running around like a madwoman trying to keep my store looking pretty, celebrating birthdays, and of course organising a totally rad Halloween costume.

{ps my hair is tied up in these photos, not all chopped off!}

Happy Birthday Aidan!

If you will excuse me getting a bit mushy on the blog, I just wanted to wish my boyfriend Aidan a HUGE happy birthday!

He only makes sporadic appearances on the blog but he does take almost all of my outfit photos (you can tell which ones, they're the good ones) and has been such a huge support. We've been together a little over a year now and it's been one of the happiest years of my life. We also recently moved in together (!!!) which is very exciting, even if he does have to remind me to clean up after myself and wash a dish occasionally. Plus he has the exact same name as a certain Sex and the City character so I get to live out my fantasy of being Carrie Bradshaw (am I the only one who thinks she should have stuck with Aidan instead of Big?! YOU CRAZY CARRIE! Anyway, I digress).

He makes me laugh every day, he's my best friend and I love him very much. Happy birthday Aidan! x

Le Royale With Cheese

Sometimes when you're in the midst of a crappy week, you just need to put on a new (vintage) dress and ride down to the burger bar and indulge in the best burgers I have ever eaten. And check out the photo in the second picture! That, my friends, is a $1000 burger (I'm not joking). There's also a burger challenge where you pay $1 for every minute you take to finish the burger - that's the giant list on the other side of  the second picture. I think I'll be boring and stick with my cheeseburger, thanks.

Party Like A Pigeon

So, as I mentioned a while ago, the wonderful company I work at recently celebrated five years in the biz and we had a very big party which quickly turned into a lot of out of control Pigeons. BUT amongst all the melee, we had this staff portrait drawn up by the absolutely amazing Able & Game (I'm sure you would have seen their adorable cards before, Aidan and I have many lying around!). I sent the picture that's in my 'About Me' on my sidebar and I think I turned out quite recognisable (I have a party hat and pigeon on my shoulder if you still can't pick me out! I wish I'd sent in a picture with purple hair but ah well).

Isn't it great?! I have loved Able & Game for YEARS so getting the chance to be drawn by them is pretty extraordinary. I love it!

The Vintage Optical Shop

I know I did a post on glasses not long ago, but I couldn't resist showing you this beautiful Etsy store. It features a huge array of vintage frames and I can't believe how exquisitely detailed they are! They remind me of something a sassy secretary would wear in the '60s.

SWOON. They're a little bit on the expensive side - probably up to about $130 a pair - but I guess that's around what I would pay for a new pair. That last Miu Miu-esque glittery pair is very tempting... but I also love the second last pair. The only thing I'd be worried about is buying glasses without being totally sure they'd suit me, but somehow I don't think that would be a problem with these beauties. To be honest I haven't been buying or really wearing that much vintage lately, and I think these would be an awesome kick-start into making the effort to wear more.

Lady Liberty

This was another bike-ride-and-brunch outfit. I really love that they're a tradition now... it definitely gives me something to look forward to after a week of work! It's been beautiful spring weather this week so I thought I'd wear the most colourful dress I own. I bought it from Etsy a while ago, and I love it because the first time I wore it out, a woman came up to me and told me it reminded her of dresses that her mum used to make for her and her sister and that seeing it had made her day! Which of course, then made my day.

This little newsagents next to the cafe had a really strange mix of things for sale... magazines, fake flowers, domino sets, hip flasks, and an oddly large collection of naked ladies-patterned lighters.

Of course, by the time I got home to write this the sky had clouded over and it looks like it's going to rain tonight...

Skulls & Roses

After a couple of weeks of umm-ing and ahh-ing over this cardigan, I finally just added it to my cart and soon enough it was on its way to me. I never thought I would own any skull-themed items of clothing, but I loved the Day of the Dead-esque pattern on it.  I liked this outfit because it reminded me a little of one of my favourite singers Lanie Lane. I really liked the rockabilly edge, although I really need to get a new plain black skirt to wear! This one was an impulse purchase about two years ago from ASOS, and I wear it about twice a week.

And I must admit that while it took me about two hours of serious debate at work (including a test run, during which the shoes drew the attention of the security guards at the pub across from me, who looked genuinely concerned for my safety), I decided not to wear my Litas out - I wore this to Pigeonhole's fifth birthday celebrations and it was great! - because not long after I found the open bar I was already wobbly enough on my much, much lower heels. I am eternally grateful to Past Tara for making the decision to wear almost flat shoes and save myself a broken ankle or dislocated knee (they're actually not TOO bad to walk in but I haven't had a completely stumble-free run in them yet).

Modcloth cardigan // Motel skirt // Tights from David Jones // Jeffery Campbell Litas from Revolve Clothing (and just quietly, how good are these?! They're on sale too!)

So yes. I wore this to the Pigeonhole fifth birthday party and it was really fun! It was in our new, HUGE pop up store at 140 William where there was an excellently styled runway show, then we went to our (mostly) staff after party in Bon Marche arcade. It's always so lovely when we can all get together because I work five days a week and hardly get to see anyone!

I only took a few photos because I was in a bit of a rush to get to work, but I really loved this outfit! I would wear it again in a second if my white cardigan wasn't already covered in makeup stains/champagne/food crumbs... I'm just no good with white clothing, really. I'm not the most coordinated person in the world at the best of times. At least I have these photos to remind me how pristine it used to be... The same thing happened with my all-white 21st dress so I guess I should have learned my lesson by now.

Review: Firmoo Glasses

I haven't done a review for so long, so I was pretty thrilled when Firmoo contacted me to try out their fancy frames. I do actually have a prescription for reading glasses, and since my Oliver Peoples frames were stolen I was in need of some new specs! Here's my experience with Firmoo...

The glasses themselves are quite a basic shape. I love the wayfarer style so I thought I would just stick with what I know; buying glasses online is totally new territory for me. But, Firmoo have an excellent offer where the first pair of glasses is free for new customers - you just have to pay for shipping. So, even if you're not 100% sure on which style you like, it could be a good way to try out a shape that you're not familiar with.

The glasses themselves (I cannot for the life of me find them on the site! Here's some similar ones) are pretty cute. They look quite a bit more speckled than they do in the picture, but to be honest the quality is better than I expected for such a low price point. I've been wearing them since I got them (as you can see in quite a few of my Restyle posts) and they're comfortable and light enough to wear all day. I don't use glasses all day every day, but so far this pair hasn't dug into my skin or been uncomfortable.

I'd definitely recommend trying out their rather excellent first-customer offer - new customers get their first pair of glasses for free, and only pay for shipping, and they really do have a great range of glasses. Since I just wear glasses when I'm on the computer or reading, I'm not sure how these would stand up being worn all day every day, but in my experience they're comfortable and look very cute on. And the shipping was incredible - I think they arrived in less than a week, which I was very impressed with. All in all they were a pleasure to review! I think I might be tempted to order some more soon...

{These glasses were generously sent for review by Firmoo, however all thoughts and opinions are my own. Oh, and yes I DID forget to clean up a spot of eyeliner just under my eyelash}

Little Things 04.10.12

I seriously can't believe that September is over already! I feel like I was just celebrating my birthday and now it's literally a month later and I'm left bewildered. BEWILDERED. Anyway, here are some little photos from the past couple of weeks. If you want to see more, pop on over to Instagram and follow @gininateacup.

Fashion Festival Instagrams!

Teeny dachshund ring! My new favourite // Planet Books

Photos at work // Duck & rooster kettles // Bad weather (it was hailing!) // One of my friends from work made me this rad sign!

My hair went blonde for a while (but it's dyed purple again now!) // Beautiful flowers from Aidan! He got them delivered to work as well. He gets all the bonus points.

♥ Listening to: I just discovered Spotify so I've been listening to EVERYTHING! I love making playlists so I have been obsessing over creating the perfect ones. Also, my dad bought me a compilation album called Boogie! The Best of Australian Rock'n'Roll in the 60s and 70s and it's so good. I listen to it all the time. I would recommend it if you're into the bluesy, rockabilly kind of thing.

And this song is my guilty pleasure. I LOVE IT but it's SO cheesy!

♥ Watching: SNL! I'm so glad it's back. The first two episodes haven't been fantastic but the Seth Macfarlane episode did feature a pretty great Psy parody, so there's that.

♥ Reading: Shamefully I have not picked up a book in ages, it's been such a busy couple of weeks! So instead I'll share some of my favourite blogs at the moment: Little Chief Honeybee, Sometimes Sweet, Yours Truly, Scathingly Brilliant and Fancy Fine.

♥ Wearing: Um... I've been really naughty with online shopping recently. In the past month I've ordered this ASOS dress; and this cardigan and these two dresses from Modcloth. Oh, and two shirts from Threadless. WHOOPS. I think I done gone and caught the fashion fever.

♥ Eating: Aidan and I went on a dinner date to one of my favourite restaurants a while ago, I cannot recommend it enough! So cheap but such good Thai food. Other than that I have just been making super easy food because I am LAZY. Can someone please direct me to some good cooking blogs?

{p.s - I don't think I mentioned this last time I did a 'Little Things' post but I got the idea of adding 'Watching', 'Listening To' etc from Sometimes Sweet's Currently posts. I just thought it would add a little something to these posts so they weren't all Instagram pics! Thanks to Danielle for the inspiration x}
