STYLEAID 2013 | Behind The Scenes

STYLEAID 2013 | Behind The Scenes

Last Friday night I was incredibly lucky to get a chance to take some photos at STYLEAID (thank you to Muse Bureau for the opportunity!). STYLEAID is a hugely successful fundraising event in Perth, raising money for the WA AIDS Council by putting on a very fancy dinner, an amazing fashion show, an auction and of course a rocking after-party.

While the guests were polishing off their dinner, the other bloggers and I were snapping pictures backstage, and in hair and makeup. Can I just say OH MY GOOD GOD I never realised how insane it is backstage at a runway show? My only experience with it has been watching the finale shows of Project Runway (HA!) so I assumed it was all exaggerated for reality TV purposes. WRONG! I think there were about forty different models altogether and it was just chaos backstage. CHAOS! I really must commend the stylists, make up artists and the models themselves for managing to pull off such a flawless show! Also, I was quietly devastated that models do not receive the huge amounts of airbrushing I've always assumed - these models were all stunning, with beautiful glowy skin and fab bodies. Also - asking models backstage for 'a quick photo' is the easiest job in the world because they automatically go into full 'model mode' - artfully arched backs, perfect pouts and fierce expressions. I love it!

I still have a couple more posts on STYLEAID to come, so keep your eyes peeled over the next couple of days for my photos from the runway show!

SHOP | Breaking Bad

SHOP | Breaking Bad

Only a few days now until the last episodes of Breaking Bad, so I had to make it the shopping feature this week. I'll be a bit sad when it comes to an end, won't you? It's also driving me crazy because I have no idea how, exactly, it will end. Although the show's twists are always just crazy enough to work, I can't help feeling that the writers are going to troll us all and this will have just been a world that some meth addict dreamed up or something.

But man, it's just such a good show. Bryan Cranston especially just gives me the chills. Most of the shows I adore feature at least a little tackiness, but this show is like drinking a smooth, expensive glass of scotch after only ever having vodka cruisers. Or, indeed, trying Walter White's meth after having the far inferior meth, if a more apt metaphor were to be used (I guess?). Here's some brilliant Breaking Bad things I found on Etsy, if you want to take your love of the show to the next level...
'Yeah, Mr White' brooch | Kate Rowland Illustration
Breaking Bad charm bracelet | little Samantics
Walt and Jesse stud earrings | Meowheads {looks like the Etsy shop listings have expired, but hopefully she'll be back soon!}
Better Call Saul tote | One Wild Oat
Heisenberg quotes | Big Bad Wolf
Breaking Bad pencils | Pop Culture Pencils

And my favourite prints from Society 6. I could waste hours on that site. So far I've bought these Liz Lemon and Leslie Knope prints and a Biggie poster that has the lyrics for 'Big Poppa' in French... I have diverse tastes I guess.

If you just can't wait til August 11 to get your hit, have a look through these AMAs by members of the cast - you've got Bryan Cranston, Bob Odenkirk, Giancarlo Esposito, RJ Mitte, and even the guy who gets his head squished by an ATM in that one episode. And Aaron Paul's starts at 4pm EDT! Ahhhhhh!

WEIRD THINGS I BUY | Part Two

WEIRD THINGS I BUY | Part Two

Here is the long overdue follow-up to this post! Yes, of course I am still buying slightly odd things from every corner of the internet... here's what I've picked up lately.

I saw this shirt in an Instagram from XoJane's Emily and about five minutes later I had ordered it. I don't really know why, I'm not even a huge Motorhead fan and DEFINITELY would not recommend going to bed with them in any sense, but it made me laugh and at 10:45 on a Saturday night when I'm at home online shopping, that's enough of an incentive for me.

BOOBS & BOMBS SHOWER CURTAIN | Family Jewels (via Urban Outfitters)
I first saw this shower curtain when it was $64, and while I really kind of loved it, paying $64 for a shower curtain seemed a little ridiculous. But I checked back around sale time and it was reduced to $30! Yes! It's sadly sold out now, so if you wanted a shower curtain with various pairs of boobs (and some singular boobs, which is a bit odd) then YOU'RE OUTTA LUCK. Because I know how high the boobs-on-shower-curtain demand is.

This is another thing that I was waiting to go down in price before I could justify buying it. And oh happy day, it was only around twenty bones when I ordered it this week! I can't wait to do a li'l shimmy and make the fringing flap in the breeze. The simple things in life, ya know.

MARNEY JEANS | ASOS
Okay, not at all weird, but weird for ME! Do you know the last time I bought a pair of jeans?! It was probably around the time I started this blog. I think I wore them to a Coldplay concert (blergh). Anyway, I was really happy with these jeans and defs would recommend them BUT make sure you get the right size! I bought a size up from usual because my hips don't lie and jeans usually are a tad unflattering, but these ones have quite a lot of stretch in them and are already way too big. But I love them so much I'm thinking of buying another pair anyway.

Sadly not quite as odd as the last time - no celebrity badges or Morissey jumpers - so if you know of any weird/cool shops out there please let me know!

WHAT I WORE | Paisley

WHAT I WORE | Paisley

Another outfit post that was preceded by another excellent brunch. I love having more days off! LOVE IT! It means there's so much more time for obsessively sending Snapchats and downloading Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares. No, I don't spend my days off all that productively. Anyway, we drove past Mount Lawley Bowling Club and thought it was as good a place as any to take photos. I've never been before and hardly ever even driven past it, but I loved the art deco theme to it.

I was still feeling the '60s vibe, especially since I cut my fringe last night, so I wore this paisley shift dress and my good old Target boots, which I can't believe are still holding up after about three years. I think they're the best shoes I've gotten for $40.

ASOS paisley shift dress and necklace | Target boots | Dangerfield tooth earrings | Pigeonhole bag

I love buying any tooth related jewellery, if only because I know it will amuse my parents (who are both dentists). I have, however, come across a lot of disturbingly realistic and even actually real tooth pieces, which creeps me out quite a lot. I really do NOT dig anything that looks creepily medical. We have an Anatomic Annie head in the store I work and it gives me shivers walking past it. ARGH

In this photo Aidan was cracking me up by singing the song from this video. I know it's the kind of thing that you'll either think it's funny or just be like "WTF mate?" but I think it's basically the most hilarious thing I've ever seen. Although he was only getting me to laugh in the first place because he clearly does not get the standard "fashion blogger smizing fiercely into the camera" pose and keeps asking why I'm not smiling. So rude. Blogging is srs.

Well, after I took these photos I had dinner with my parents before they head off to Italy (my mum's rowing in the World Masters races! Go mum!) and then went to see Empire thanks to a friend getting a bunch of free tickets. It was incredible! I think it's on in Perth for a little while longer so if you get a chance to see it, please do. And then tomorrow night I have a friend's birthday drinks. This is the busiest weekend I've had in quite a while... winter does turn me into quite the hermit. I use the term "winter" lightly, since these photos are taken in the third month of winter and I didn't even need to wear multiple layers. Thanks, Australian weather!

Hope you have an excellent weekend!

WHAT I WORE | It's A Mod, Mod World

WHAT I WORE | It's A Mod, Mod World

HELLO! I am back yet again! It's been so long since I blogged that my account was suspended because of "suspicious activity"? 'SCUSE ME?! Ain't no tomfoolery going on here, Google!

I have had a busy couple of months. First of all, I got a new job! As much as I loved working at Pigeonhole, I felt like it was time to try something new, so now I'm working at a wallpaper/antiques store. It's so much closer to my house and best of all IT ISN'T OPEN SUNDAYS (or Friday nights, for that matter)! And I have a lot more time off, so today Aidan and I went out to brunch at Lincolns 102. It's such a cute cafe and the food was so fresh and crazy amazing.

I wore this dress I got from ASOS a while ago - it's a wee bit short but it is one of my favourite dresses at the moment. I feel a need for more '60s mod dresses in my wardrobe (unfortunately the need for the bills to be paid on time is slightly greater at the moment). The Ben Sherman coat is one I got about two years ago - it's not actually that warm but it's pretty handy for Perth's trying-to-be-Melbourne, four seasons in one day weather.

ASOS dress | Ben Sherman coat | Rubi flats | Steve Buscemi badge from Napkin Items | Michael Hill ring

The Steve Buscemi badge is especially appropriate because Aidan and I are re-watching Boardwalk Empire before the new season starts in September. Whenever I wear this badge I get asked either "Who IS that?" and, when they know who it is, simply "Why?", with a genuinely concerned look on their face. Well, to be honest it was a random Etsy purchase where I also bought a ring with a miniature baby on it and so I don't really know why. But then again, when can a Steve Buscemi badge not improve an outfit? It certainly improves my day to look down and see that little bug-eyed face in a red glittery heart.

And until next time, I'll leave you with one of my favourite (and appropriate for this post, given the mod-inspired outfit) songs at the moment. Have an excellent Wednesday!

SHOP | Parks & Recreation

SHOP | Parks & Recreation

I'd heard so many great things about Parks & Recreation but I'd never watched more than the first few episodes. WHATTA CRIME! When I was sick a couple of weeks ago I made my way through the whole thing and I LOVED IT. I should have known anything with Amy Poehler in it would be amazing. Well, maybe not everything... anyone remember Baby Mama? No? Exactly (sorry Amy).

I'm not sure when season six comes out but I'll be waiting! And probably rewatching the entire series at some point. To tide me over, I rounded up some of my favourite Parks & Recreation items I've found.

{clockwise from top left}
1 | Ron Swanson nail decals from NailSpin, $5.40
2 | Scented Butter & Maple Syrup Waffle Necklace from Tiny Hands jewellery, $28 {Amy Poehler actually wore this on the show!}
3 | Ron Swanson cross-stitch from Cincinnati Threads, $21.59
4 | Treat Yo Self embroidery hoop from Stitch Culture, $36.71
5 | April and Andy cross-stitch pattern from You Make Me Sew Happy, $3.23
6 | Papa Ban's Low Cal Calzone Zone shirt from Red Bubble, $26.94
7 | Li'l Sebastian plush toy from NBC shop, $19
8 | I Love Bacon cookbook from Modcloth, $19.99
9 | 'Wonder With A Whisker' cookie cutter set from Modcloth, $12.99

And my three favourite prints... The middle artist is really fantastic and does an awesome Liz Lemon print as well. I want to get both of them and hang them in my living room.

1 | Parks & Recreation poster by Shanti Draws from Society 6, $17
2 | Leslie Knope print by Heymonster from Society 6, $14
3 | Foods of Ron Swanson print from Roaring Softly, $21.59

And if you need an excuse to purchase any of these lovely items... do I even need to say it?

WHAT I WORE | Gatsby

WHAT I WORE | Gatsby

I wore this outfit to go to Miss Kitty's Saloon and eat poutine (SO GOOD! I can't believe I went almost twenty four years without having it in my life) and watch The Great Gatsby with some friends. The Great Gatsby was actually a lot better than I expected; of course it was really eyegasmically gorgeous and the costumes were amazing, but even with all the unnecessarily cheesy parts, it was still really enjoyable. And it had a really great soundtrack! I do wish I'd read the book first, and then maybe I would be a little closer to understanding the obsession with Daisy Buchanan. She was FLAKY and MEAN! Even if she did have the best costumes in the movie and I still will not rest until I get a copy of that crystal dress and pale blue fur capelet

As you can probably tell by my expression in these photos, it was FREEZING when I took these before work! This coat is probably the warmest thing I own. It's just like wearing a big, but also terribly chic, blanket. It was a lovely given from somebody close to me, and when I wear it I get reminded of all these nice memories. That's why I like vintage clothing - there are so many memories behind people's wardrobes and it's nice to wear something that has some history like that.

Vintage coat | Trashy Diva dress | Target cardigan | ASOS loafers | Henry Holland tights (with secret fake suspenders!) | Opal ring

I got this dress ages ago (on sale!) from Trashy Diva, after lusting after a different version of the same print on Modcloth. It's a lot more than I would usually spend on one dress, but I've worn it so many times since I bought it that it's well worth it! The print is amazing. I'm still debating whether to take it up a couple of inches to make it more suitable for everyday wear, but I kind of love the longer length as well... it feels like a very classy dress at the moment (though it has definitely seen me through some not-so-classy times).

Well, this week I have a couple of exciting things happening BUT I have also made some new blog posts! One is Parks & Recreation themed. I finished the fifth season yesterday and I'm already having withdrawals.
