Goodbye, 2012

This year was the first year in quite a while where I felt like it was a really, really good year. I've had so many opportunities, met so many amazing people, and had so much fun! Here's a little bit of what I got up to...

♥ I got a job at Pigeonhole!
I'm not totally sure my boss remembers but I applied for a position at Pigeonhole about two and a half years ago, fumbled my way through the interview, and didn't get the job. Well, this year I got a casual job, which then turned into a full time job, which THEN turned into a manager position! I love my little store so much and I have met so many awesome people through my job. It really is like working with a big family.

♥ ...and celebrated their fifth birthday!
This was such a ridiculously fun night! Even vomiting the second I got out of my taxi home was totally worth it.

♥ I had my year anniversary with Aidan (and we moved in together!)
It is so nice to be able to spend every day with such a lovely, hilarious person.

♥ I took part in the Perth Fashion Festival's Restyle project...
This was definitely a highlight of the year. How many times do you get to partake in a photoshoot where you wear this amazing chillies and flowers headpiece and a beautiful vintage dress? Let's not mention the impossibly high heels that I literally could not walk in. Thanks so much to Renee for allowing me to take part in this!

♥ ...and walked on the runway!
Again, something I was incredibly lucky to get to do. I do kind of wish I hadn't scared myself into this way too relaxed, chilled out state where I put my outfits together at 11pm the night before, and actually managed to look up while I was strutting my stuff, but it was still a lot of fun.

♥ AND I got to go to some more amazing PFF shows.
I went to the Student Runway and the Designer Capsule shows and they were incredible! I was really so thankful for the opportunity.

♥ I turned 23!
I really wish I'd done more for my birthday this year. I went for a lovely dinner with my family but I didn't really celebrate it otherwise. So now I'm ALWAYS going to have at least one day where I demand everyone's attention and accept free drinks and gifts. TREAT YO SELF. But on the bright side, I did get this pretty sweet bike from Aidan.

♥ I dyed my hair purple.
I really wanted to write some kind of "How to care for your coloured hair" post but... I GOT NUTHIN'. My hair was so dry and brittle after I'd dyed it a couple of times and while I'd really like to dye my hair again in the future, I'll definitely take better care of it! CONDITION YO TRESSES, GURL!

♥ I went to Blues & Roots, Regina Spektor, Elton John, Ben Folds Five, Sigur Ros, Groovin' the Moo... phew!

♥ Ate some delicious food and actually started to cook stuff!
And was pretty good at it (most of the time. Last week I tried to make a pasta salad and it turned out to be feta with a teeny bit of pepperoni, pasta and basil and... well... I don't really want to talk about it).

♥ Oh, and I bought a burger jumper. Obviously one of life's important events, you know how it is.

So thanks for reading Gin in a Teacup this year and see you in 2013!

2012 In Outfits

Hey guys! I thought I'd share some of my favourite outfits from the past year. I think this year I really came into my own, style-wise. I embraced prints wholeheartedly, even if they were a little bit ridiculous (burger print jumper, anyone?). I also had the opportunity to put together a lot of op-shop based outfits for the Restyle challenge, which was a lot of fun and reminded me that op shops are actually a pretty great place to pick up some new outfits.

I also tried to expand my vintage wardrobe and found some pretty awesome Etsy sellers - Bohemian Bisoux and my old favourite (but recently renamed) Exile Vintage were the source of many a purchase! I really hope I can keep building up my vintage collection because they really are my favourite clothes to wear.

If you're interested, you can see more outfit recaps for 2010 and 2011. Thanks for indulging my love of clothes for yet another year!

{p.s very sorry for how quiet it's been around these parts lately! Working full time in retail over Christmas kicked my ass and I've had no time to post, though I do have a few special posts to go up before the year's over! Thanks for sticking with me x}

Los Pollos Hermanos

Hey again! It's weird, I didn't stick very closely to the rules during the Black Out Challenge, but now that it's officially over I've gone back to my usual colourful outfits. I think last week I had a pretty stressful week and I just felt like dressing in more subdued colours. I don't know. Either way, I really wanted to wear this shirt my sister gave me as an early Christmas present. At first when I opened it I was like "Um... thanks," and then she was all "Don't you recognise it from Breaking Bad?" and then I got it and it's one of my new favourite shirts. And my second Breaking Bad shirt. What? I didn't realise I liked the show so much. I kept the bird theme running with my seagull print skirt and my pheasant printed headscarf.

Los Pollos Hernanos tee // My Girl Gwendoline skirt // Kmart flats // Op-shop scarf // Pigeonhole stacked rings

Excuse my gappy fringe! It needs a trim. And to be washed... hence the headscarf.

So I wore this for a brunch date with my sister (last time I'll see her before she goes to the UK for a month! Sob) and then we checked out Dangerfield's t-shirt sale. I bought a few (six) but some of them were presents (for me). I ended up with a True Romance one, one with Bruce Springsteen on it (!!! BE STILL MY HEART), one featuring a guy demonstrating hip hop dance moves, and one with my favourite singer who looks like a piece of bacon, Iggy Pop. And then two for Aidan which may end up working their way into my wardrobe. And they were all ten bucks! WHAT?! HOLD ME BACK!!

I'm ridiculously pumped because I have today and tomorrow off work! I worked Thursday through to Monday and so Tuesday and Wednesday are like my weekend... my head's spinning a bit BUT I'm off to Stephen Merchant tonight! He's like a tall sexy tree.

Christmas Jams

Hello again! Since it's the first of December I thought I'd share my favourite Christmas songs with you. I've put a lot of work into perfecting my Christmas playlist, since I'll be listening to it eight hours a day five days a week, but these songs are my top picks.

If you've been reading for a while you know how I feel about Bruce Springsteen (he's called The Boss for a reason. BOSS OF MY HEART) and so it's only right that this song is first on the list. I will warn you it has comes with Tara's Patented Ladyboner Warning. I have only ever heard live versions but who cares? And on a sidenote, how much does that picture crack you up?! Maybe it's just me.

I mostly listen to 1950s and 60s girl groups and so this song is a perfect Christmas song to me. Christmas? Heartbreak? Girl group harmonies? Sold. And can we please just talk about that red coat Darlene is wearing above? DIVA.

YOU KNOW I had to include this song. What else is there to say about it? It's not Christmas until I hear a bit of Mimi wailing on the radio. I refuse to believe anyone can not dance around when they hear this song.

Last time I went to the record fair I bought an Elvis Presley Christmas album and it is basically the raddest thing ever. I downloaded this song from a random '100 Greatest Christmas Songs' album last year and then DELETED IT by accident and have been trying to remember what it was for the past year. I only found it by googling 'Elvis Presley Christmas Cadillac' and SUCCESS!

I can't remember if Bob Dylan put out a whole Christmas album or just this song but it's so creepy and amazing at the same time. A gravel-voiced Bobby D trying to get in the holiday spirit? It's hilarious. But be warned, the first time I listened to it I looked like this: O_______O, which incidentally my reaction when searching for a Bob Dylan Christmas photo. So many photos of Bob with Santa hats photoshopped on. Is this a thing now?

One of my favourite Christmas songs ever. I have heard covers from Kylie Minogue (AWFUL, it tries so hard to be sexy that I just get embarrassed) and Michael Buble (I do have a soft spot for Boobs so he gets a pass) but nothing can measure up to this original. Let's not forget about the real meaning of Christmas - expensive presents (I kid).

So this is a fairly untraditional Christmas song but it gets thrashed by me for the month of December (except by December I mean all year round). It feels like such a traditional Irish song but features a couple calling each other "cheap slut on junk" and scumbags and maggots and even with all that, it's just so lovely. It also features one of my favourite lines in a song ever:

"You kept my dreams from me/When I first found you"

"I kept them with me babe/I put them with my own
Can't face it all alone/I built my dreams around you"

Well, there's my Christmas 2012 playlist! What songs did I miss out? Don't say 'Silver Bells' or 'The Christmas Song' as they are two of my most hated Christmas songs.

Hole In One

HELLO! Here's my second outfit post for Black Out. I maaay have phoned it in a little bit with the black tights, but trust me, if I put on coloured tights my legs just look like two kielbasas. And it has been COLD in Perth for the last couple of days! Yesterday it was insanely windy all day and I didn't think I'd make it through the day having to constantly keep holding my skirt down so I didn't have a Marilyn Monroe moment. So shorts and tights it was (I don't own a single pair of pants apart from some scungy harem pants from Target).

And yes, I pulled out my golf cardigan! I pretty much bought it just to be able to own it, if you know what I mean, but then I thought why not just wear it? It's actually ridiculously warm. Which is kind of negated by the little patch of torso that showed up when I decided to tie my top up like this.

Seed Femme top // Hi There by Karen Walker tights // Black tights :( // ASOS flats // Vintage cardigan from Plumberry Vintage // Pigeonhole panther ring

My dad and I have a tradition where we go to the West Coast Blues & Roots together and next year's line-up looks incredible. Robert Plant, IGGY POP (*fans self*), Kitty, Daisy & Lewis, Wilco, PAUL SIMON?! AMAZING! Sorry for ALL THE CAPITALS in this post, I was drinking a massive Red Bull while I wrote it.

Hope your weeks are all going excellently, and if you're participating in Black Out too then send me your links gurl! I want to see how everyone else is handling it!

It Ain't Easy Being Green

Hello! Here's my first official Black Out challenge post. I got this dress in the mail yesterday and I absolutely love it! It had been languishing on my Etsy wishlist for a couple of months and I'm so glad I snapped it up before someone else did. It fits perfectly and is such a beautiful olive green. I can just picture it with perfect red lips and victory rolls. Ahh! So good. I'm pretty terrified of spilling something on it, though.

Vintage dress from Bohemian Bisoux // Sportsgirl flats // Pigeonhole stag studs

I thought I would have NO problem with the Black Out challenge until I realised it also included shoes and accessories. 'SCUSE ME? WHY YOU GOTTA PLAY ME LIKE THAT? I pretty much live in black flats (and they smell gross enough to prove it). I think I might have to break out my collection of heels to make it through the week because otherwise you'll be seeing a ridiculous amount of these loafers. And summer is no friend to closed in shoes.

And to match my vintage dress, here is one of my favourite vintage tunes. YES it was in Boardwalk Empire and y'all know how I feel about that show (I love it).

Weird Things I Buy, Part One

I had a girl come in for a trial in my store this week and she mentioned she'd read my blog (hi Caroline!) which reminded me that it's not only my family who reads this (hi Grandma!) and I thought I'd better put up a post.

So, here are some things I've bought recently! Sorry for the stock photos, but I haven't actually gotten them yet. Once they do they'll probably be on regular rotation in my wardrobe and you'll be sick of them (especially the pin! Oh my god!).

A while ago I was searching for novelty cardigans on Etsy and I found this gem. I don't know if I've mentioned before but my boyfriend is into golf in a major way. I don't really get it and I think my attention span is way too low to play such a game, but at least when I am dragged to the golf course I will be dressed appropriately, even when drinking wine out of a Coke can (has happened).

I found this shop while I was trawling old xoJane articles (in fact, this article inspired me to share MY weird Etsy finds with you). I have heard a lot of not-so-great things about that website but I LOVE it. I could read it all day. Anyway, I only just ordered this ring today, and I'm still not entirely sure why I thought I needed it in my collection. I don't even like babies! I'm kind of just fascinated by the weirdness of it.

Okay obviously this shop is full of strange and wonderful items. I mean, they sell Snoop Dogg prayer candles. SNOOP DOGG PRAYER CANDLES. You feel me? If the shipping for candles wasn't so expensive I would have a little Snoop shrine set up right about now. But this isn't about Snoop Dogg, it's all about Steve Buscemi. I am obsessed with Boardwalk Empire - can I just mention how amazing the latest episode was? Holy shit. I was on the edge of my seat watching through my fingers the entire time - so there's a lot of Buscemi love going on in our house. And now I can force people to look at his bug eyes every time I wear this badge.

I've seen this jumper on various blogs for years now, and this year I FINALLY managed to snap one up before they all sold out! Yay! I was tossing up between this one and one that was more about The Smiths, but the hilariously tacky Christmas jumper won out in the end. Obviously. I wonder what Morrissey would think of these jumpers? He would probably give me a withering glance and then stare off all melancholy into the distance. Oh, I do love him so.

What weird stuff have you bought recently? Send me links so I can spend my money!

Black Out

Hey! What's up? Sorry for my unintentional hiatus. The week before last I went to see Elton John, Sigur Ros and Ben Folds Five (one night after the other! Bam bam bam!) and of course I've been getting the store ready for Christmas, which is probably going to be INSANE. But I thought I'd pop in and let you know about a challenge I'm taking part in this week. My blogging buddy Mon has come up with this fun challenge for a bunch of fashion bloggers, called the Black Out Challenge. Mon's encouraged us to throw out black for a week and to blog about the colourful results! I couldn't take any photos today - it feels weird to apologise when that happens! - but I assure you I am not wearing a speck of black. I've got a grey Breaking Bad shirt, a navy skirt with white dots, and brown loafers on. Not the most exciting start, but keep an eye out this week for my outfit photos!

Advanced Style

To be totally honest, the thought of getting older makes me a little bit terrified and I couldn't even tell you why. I'm only 23, so I still have quite a way to go before the ageing REALLY kicks in, but the thought of being old makes me anxious and I kind of lock it in a little box in my brain. The older women I'm lucky to be surrounded with - my amazing grandmothers, family friends and the like - are all wonderful, inspiring women, which does ease my mind. I know that being old doesn't mean you can't be smart, energetic, inspiring, wise and so on, but for some reason it just weirds me out.

Well, one of the things that makes me dread "being old" a little bit less is Advanced Style. I know I'm about a million years late on this one but I think it's one of the best street style blogs out there. I don't really get into street style blogs that much (which is weird, I love fashion bloggers but street style blogs usually make me yawn. Only so many "off duty models" you can feature before the skinny jeans + brogues + leather jacket combo gets a little tired) but this one, I can read and get inspired with my current wardrobe, and I can be fairly confident I'll still be an seriously stylish senior.

1 // 2 // 3 // 4 // 5 // 6 // 7

So, endless thanks to these rad ladies (and Wanny Di Fillipo) who give me hope that I can be this awesome when I'm in my 60s and 70s! I may not be able to control saggy skin, or dodgy joints, or failing eyesight... but at least I'll be able to rock a sequin boob tube and not give a damn.

p.s I know that once you get older, fashion and style might not be such a big deal. Obviously my mind isn't consumed by "BUT WILL I LOOK GOOD ONCE I'M OLDER?!". I don't think you need to be out-there in your style to be inspiring, either, but these photos made me smile and I hope they make you smile too!

Little Things 09.11.12

Hello again! I thought it was time to do another Little Things post, since I have been doing a lot of stuff  and finding absolutely no time to blog about it. So here is a little snippet of what I've been up to...

We had a surprise picnic for my beautiful friend Grace and it was amazing! So much good food and wonderful people and it looked gorgeous too. The whole setup was based on this beach picnic shoot that was in Shop Til You Drop's latest issue. It ended up being a little cold for the beach (not that you can tell from these photos) so we took it to the park! I say "we" but my contribution was just providing chorizo and haloumi.

A bit of a better look at my Halloween jumper and bone bracelet // I was locked out of Aidan's parent's house last Friday so I borrowed Jerry for some shameless selfies // BURGER JUMPER (again)

I was very lucky to receive tickets for the opening night of the Australian Ballet Company's Romeo & Juliet and it was beautiful! My sister came and kept me company // One of my friends from work bought me some macarons as a pick-me-up one afternoon

I made sloppy joes (which I've never seen before outside of American high school movies) and they were delicious... // ... as was this banoffee pie from the aforementioned picnic! People lost their shit over this. I actually thought I would punch someone if I didn't get a slice.

The Pigeonhole party was a few weeks ago - at the start of October, and you can see my outfit post about it here - but I only just realised I never put any photos up! I do have more but the night got significantly more shambolic after this point and, well, no one needs that incriminating evidence on their blog...

♥ Wearing: I have actually tried to cut back on spending (especially since Christmas is NEXT MONTH, eek) but I did go a bit Etsy crazy a while ago and bought a sequinned cardigan, golf-themed cardigan (WHY?!) and a beautiful 1950s fascinator. And then a really lovely olive 1950s dress. BUT THAT'S IT.

♥ Lusting after: You would think there's nothing left to lust over after I seem to have bought EVERYTHING, but I do quite like this sweet little swan dress from ASOS and I am obsessed with these Jeffery Campbell pencil flats from Modcloth. I think I'm the only short person I know who still doesn't wear heels.

♥ Watching: Like I mentioned a few posts back I am all about Project Runway. I thought season ten had just started but it's actually finished, which means I have a whole season to catch up on! I'm only about four episodes in but I'm already hooked.

♥ Reading: I actually managed to read a couple of books while I was off sick! I read Lola Bensky by Lily Brett... I was expecting to love it because it's about a girl who's a music journalist in the 1960s, but it just fell really flat for me. I actually struggled to finish it because I didn't sympathise with the main character at all. I also read Everyone Changes But You by Maggie Alderson and I loved it. I love all her books. I know they're pretty fluffy chick-lit but there's nothing wrong with that, especially when you're sick! Then I decided to read My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult and yep, it's just as sad as I remembered it to be.

♥ Excited about: Next week I have a huge week of concerts to go to! I have Elton John on Monday night, Sigur Ros on Tuesday night, and then Ben Folds Five on Wednesday night. Phew! And after that Aidan goes to Melbourne for Radiohead, so I'm a little bit excited to be able to watch my shows and eat food out of the carton and be messy for a few days.
