As I mentioned in my last post, I am going to be away for a week on a little island called Rottnest. I go with my family, and some family friends, every year and it's so much fun! It's such a beautiful place and I really love going to the beach - before I moved up to Perth my house was a ten minute walk away, and I miss being able to go whenever I feel like!
As always before I go, I have a big panic about what to wear. Most of my summer clothes don't really translate to lounging around on a beach, I just feel blah when I try and dress ultra-casually! So, I thought I would look to some 60's and 70's Bond Girls for some style inspiration, they always seem to be in bikinis, or at the very least, stylish and summery clothes (well, has there EVER been a Bond movie set in the depths of winter?) Well, maybe I won't be covering myself in gold paint or attaching a gun to my bikini, but you have to have inspiration, don't you? I actually have a Bond poster (for Thunderball, which isn't my favourite but the poster is AWESOME) on my living room wall.

Calling all lovely readers & blogger! I'm going to be away at the start of February (from the 6th until [FRIDAY] the 13th), and I would really love it if some people would do guest posts while I'm gone. Inappropriate Crushes

We all know that it doesn't matter what people think, if you like someone, that should be good enough for you and you shouldn't have to answer to anyone else. But let's face it, everyone has guilty crushes on people. You know, the kind that are perfectly validated in YOUR mind, but that make other people go "Errrgh! You like THEM??" Instead of hiding them, bring them forward, I say! Just in time for Valentine's Day... feel the love! Here are five of my slightly shameful crushes. (On a side note, I really detest the word "crush". Is there not a better word? The word "crush" should really be left in tween magazines and Disney shows.)

1. Dan Akyroyd in The Blues Brothers


I watched The Blues Brothers for the first time in ages last week, and I had forgotten how AWESOME the movie is. I think that anyone who has been in scenes with James Brown AND Aretha Franklin AND Ray Charles is infinitely more attractive. Also if they can pull of the wayfarers-and-suit combo so effortlessly while driving a police car everywhere.

2. Moss from The IT Crowd

Firstly, if you haven't seen this show, then do so immediately. Second, Moss is the most hilarious character on the show and I love him. I have actually seen some pictures of the actor who plays Moss, and he is quite good looking, but DAMMIT I PREFER HIM AS AN IT GEEK. Something is very wrong here.

3. Pete Doherty

Now, this is probably the person who elicits the most horrified responses when I profess my undying love for him (even from my best friend, who bought me his biography for my birthday). But what else am I to do when Babyshambles and The Libertines are two of my favourite bands, both led by someone with such an adorable babyface? He hasn't been in the news much lately, but a few years ago when all the pictures of him showed him leaving courthouses with five-inch-long-dirt-encrusted fingernails, well, it seemed inappropriate.

4. Jessica Rabbit

When I was little and watched Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, I think that I wanted to BE Jessica Rabbit. But everyone has to admit that this is possibly the hottest cartoon character ever drawn. Anyway, I saw a thing on Friends where Chandler had made a list of five people who he was allowed to cheat on his girlfriend with if the opportunity arose, and the conversation went something like this:
Ross: "Jessica Rabbit? You do know she's a cartoon, right?"
Chandler: "I know, I would just want to see if I could make her eyes pop out of her head."

5. Gordon Ramsey

Yes, he is grumpy and sullen with a mouth like a sailor and a horrific temper. But, phwoar.

So, who are you harbouring guilty pleasures for? 'Fess up! You know you will feel better sharing wth a bunch of strangers.

Tales of the Unexpected

This is a photoshoot that was in UK Vogue last year. Roald Dahl was my favourite author when I was younger (I still love him now!) and I think that a shoot based on his stories is a fantastic idea! It also features Tim Burton and Helena Bonham-Carter, who I love. Tim Burton is one of my three favourite directors (the other two are Stanley Kubrick and Quentin Tarantino. But I digress...). You've probably seen bits of it around the internetz, but I hope you enjoy seeing it here!






Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf
As soon as Wolf began to feel
That he would like a decent meal,
He went and knocked on Grandma's door.
When Grandma opened it, she saw
The sharp white teeth, the horrid grin,
And Wolfie said, "May I come in?"
Poor Grandmamma was terrified,
"He's going to eat me up!" she cried.
And she was absolutely right.
He ate her up in one big bite.
But Grandmamma was small and tough,
And Wolfie wailed, "That's not enough!
I haven't yet begun to feel
That I have had a decent meal!"
He ran around the kitchen yelping,
"I've got to have a second helping!"
Then added with a frightful leer,
"I'm therefore going to wait right here
Till Little Miss Red Riding Hood
Comes home from walking in the wood."
He quickly put on Grandma's clothes,
(Of course he hadn't eaten those).
He dressed himself in coat and hat.
He put on shoes, and after that
He even brushed and curled his hair,
Then sat himself in Grandma's chair.
In came the little girl in red.
She stopped. She stared. And then she said,
"What great big ears you have, Grandma."
"All the better to hear you with," the Wolf replied.
"What great big eyes you have, Grandma."said Little Red Riding Hood.
"All the better to see you with," the Wolf replied.
He sat there watching her and smiled.
He thought, I'm going to eat this child.
Compared with her old Grandmamma
She's going to taste like caviar.
Then Little Red Riding Hood said, "But Grandma,what a lovely great big furry coat you have on."
"That's wrong!" cried Wolf. "Have you forgot
To tell me what BIG TEETH I've got?
Ah well, no matter what you say,
I'm going to eat you anyway."
The small girl smiles. One eyelid flickers.
She whips a pistol from her knickers.
She aims it at the creature's head
And bang bang bang, she shoots him dead.
A few weeks later, in the wood,
I came across Miss Riding Hood.
But what a change! No cloak of red,
No silly hood upon her head.
She said, "Hello, and do please note
My lovely furry wolfskin coat."

What I Wore 22.01.09

Last night Boy & I went to see Jeff Beck, who, if you don't know, used to be in The Yardbirds - who you might remember being in Blow Up if you are AWESOME - and The Jeff Beck Group. I didn't actually know a lot (well, any) of his stuff post-Yardbirds, but I thought he was pretty great. And he kind of looked like an older Noel Fielding, so I was OK with that. AND his bass player was this amazingly talented 22 year old who looked like a cross between Ellen Page and Natalie Portman.

It was at Perth Concert Hall, which I thought would mean it was a bit more dressy because it was an actual sit-down concert. Unfortunantely no one brought THE GLAM as I did and so I felt way, waaaay overdressed in a sea of jeans and dirty t-shirts. Not that being overdressed is a bad thing, but VIZ:

I love this skirt so much, it's the first thing I bought when I went to Melbourne last year and, at that point, was the most I had ever spent on an item of clothing. Also, when I wear it, I feel like a burlesque queen! It is fantastic.

Style Icons: David Bowie

As well as being my favourite musician, David Bowie is also the most stylish man on earth (with the exception of Dapper Kid, of course!). I have been a huge fan of his ever since I saw Labyrinth when I was about 10 and ogled his ultra-tight Goblin King pants. I also think he's pretty great because he supports so many new artists and, I don't know, he just seems like one of those effortlessly cool people! Anyway, it is about time the boys got some love on Gin in a Teacup, so here we go...

I have no idea where this image is from, but isn't it an awesome outfit? I would wear this. Minus the bulge, perhaps. But I do like the idea of matching my hair to my pants to my guitar and then throwin a wildly printed blouse - and eyepatch - into the mix.

Fringing and sequins in the same outfit? Clearly Bowie/Ziggy was lightyears ahead of his time...

...or perhaps not. WHO AM I KIDDING I love him regardless.

Even managing to make a goblin look hawt. I really want one of those jackets, incidentally. Also, I would love to see someone rocking the goblin makeup today. Seriously, was this the best movie ever or what? I don't think I've seen a Jennifer Connelly movie since.

I'm not sure if David Bowie exactly pioneered the androgynous look, but he sure did it well. I read that this album cover was inspired by old movie stars like Marlene Dietrich, which you can probably tell by the tinting and the kind of faded movie star look.

It takes a certain kind of person to pull off a red and green shimmery jumpsuit, and I think that Bowie does it quite well. Do you think he ever regrets the red mullet? I've had much less...overt hairstyles that I can't look at without cringing. Oh well, whatever works for you I suppose.

So, this is a new Gin in a Teacup category that is partly me naming blog articles that I like, partly just pictures of things that amuse me, and just lots of things from around the internet in general. Worst explanation ever? Perhaps.

♥ These headpieces are totally insane. I can appreciate the ferosh of the lion one, but the daschund looks kind of sad and creeps me out a bit. You can see the rest here, at the newly revamped Be A Tiger.

What I Wore 19.01.09

Hello lovely people! I am currently at my mum and dad's house in Bunbury, which is currently being painted, and trying not to inhale too many fumes so I don't get dizzy and fall down the stairs or anything. Anyway! Since I have been on yet another sporadic posting schedule, I will try to blog as much as possible while I am down here. In between reading girly/trashy novels and gorging myself on Mama Lloyd's home cooking. OK?

This is what I wore to coffee with one of my friends, it was his birthday recently and so I bought him a little anime schoolgirl figurine (which he loved) and a Darth Vader action figure (which he rolled his eyes at). These things have to be done, you know. I got this dress for $20 in the sales, which isn't bad considering I had been ogling it ever since my trip to Melbourne in August last year. It is a size too big but I loved it too much to let it go! That may have been a major oversight since the straps keep falling down which risks boob exposure, but oh well.

I love these little robot guys. I got them for something crazy like $3. I had a major obsession with robot jewellery a while back. I already have a blue and red robot necklace somewhere.
As for what else I've been up to, I had a job interview on Friday (at this place). I'm not sure how it went, but I don't think it's too great a sign that I haven't heard from them... But please keep your fingers crossed for me!

Also, on Sunday I met up with the usual lovely blogging ladies to go to a retro market hosted by Sugar Blue Burlesque. It was OK, there were STACKS of people though, so it made it a bit hard to look at any of the clothes, let alone try them on. I ended up with a dress and a cute cardigan though, which I will undoubtedly wear at some point in the near future and put on here. Actually, I am planning to wear the dress out to dinner on Wednesday, so... stay tuned?

I kind of wish I had more to update about but the life of the unemployed, it is not so interesting. Made less interesting that I saved up all week for this retro market so I barely left the house. Lame! Well, I am glad to have a computer back (for the moment) so I can update you with all my rambling posts. Aren't you glad?

What I Wore 12.1.09

I got Follow my blog with bloglovin´'>Bloglovin'. So, follow me if you wish! I know I am a bit late with this one, but all the cool kids are doing it! So I must jump on the bandwagon like the sheep that I am. Baa.
Apologies for the lack of posts, I have had quite a bad cold and it is TOO HOT to even contemplate wearing something nicer than the barest minimum of clothes.
So, what have I been up to? Well, last Friday I attended a Fairy Bread sleepover with some other wonderful blogging ladies (Em, Liv, Amanda & Shannon) where we ate copious amounts of pizza, drank sugar-infused mocktails, and watched 80's teen movies. It was SO MUCH FUN, I haven't had such a girly night in ages!


This is what I am wearing today. I am kind of excited because there are actual CLOUDS in the sky, which means that it might break the two-week spell of temperatures above 30 degrees (I don't know what the Farenheit conversion is, suffice to say IT IS FRIGGIN' HOT). I long for cold weather. Oh yes. Anyway, all I am doing today is cleaning (SCREW YOU, RENT INSPECTIONS), and food shopping so I can make chilli tuna pasta tonight while I watch Grease.

I got this ring a while ago, I am quite obsessed with snake jewellery at the moment (I have a snake bracelet as well). Probably a Babysitter's Club/Claudia Kishi flashback. I always wanted snake jewellery when I was younger but could never find any, and also, I was not cool enough to get away with things like that! I got this nailpolish at Sportsgirl yesterday, it's OK (maybe a bit neon for my liking, I do NOT want to be confused for one of those Presets-worshipping fluro-wearing scenester kids) but it takes about three coats for the colour to actually show up. I need to get some OPI ones, if not only for the cute names that they have!

Also, the lovely Andrea from a cat of impossible colour has tagged me with the '4th picture' post. The rules are to go to the fourth folder in your 'Pictures' & to post the fourth photo from that album. Here is mine (from an album imagintavely titled 'Pictures'):
